I'm interested in buying an NAS box for home so I can RAID protect all my files, swapping in a new drive as needed. I'm thinking ahead though of how to deal with the inevitiable event of the electronics of the chassis failing.
Many of these NAS boxes have a built in web-accessable OS. Are the formats compatible enough that if the power supply on the box fails two years from now I be able to move my array into a new model box?
The alternative is to build up my own linux box, and purchase a spare raid controller card for it, as everything else can be swapped out with off-the-shelf parts in an crash.
Or am I just being paranoid? |

Probably, but just as long as it is the same manufacturer
To be sure, I would ask the manufacturer of your intended NAS on one of their official forums |

Hi every one. I had a NASS200 of Linksys and it had a damage because and electric failure. I tried to install those hard drives in my PC but It couldn read it. Reading more about Linksys NAS I could see they have a private format protocol. Now:
1) I need to take out information inside the hard drive but I dont know how to do that.
2) I need a recomendation to buy another NAS but with open format protocol. because if it the port has a damage, I can install hard drives into a PC it to recover and backup al information.
Does some of you can support me about it?
Thanks |

If the NASS200 is in a raid array, you probably won't be able to read the contents in a ordinary PC, as the PC won't recognise the data on each individual disc. it needs it to be in the raid array to read
You would probably have to install them in to another NASS200 to read them |
