This is my problem:
Files stored on the TS ProII in a RAID 5 setup suddenly briefly become read only. This causes problems with Access for example, and other files that require constant read-write access. Sometimes Excel files open as read only, meaning that when you come to save them, you can't overwrite the original. Most of the time its fine, and it has worked OK for at least 1 year. I have done Raid scans and disk checks and whenever there have been errors detected, they have been repaired by the system. I occasionally get a disk error 5 on the daily "Terastation Status" email - don’t know if this links, but that always repairs OK!!
This is the response I got:
Put simply the ability to save files simply by writing the data to the disk has become more complicated than it used to be. Most applications that save data will use an API and "instruct how the file should be written". Since this device utilizes a Samba kernel it would be much along the same lines as trying to have MS Word instruct Linux using APIs to save a file to hard disk. Linux cannot understand these commands and these NAS devices cannot be "reworked" to be able to accept MS API file instruction. The long and short of it is these devices cannot have the data saved directly to them, you will need to save the file locally (on a workstation) and then transfer it to the NAS.
Does that mean that The Terastation is not up to being used in this way (direct access from applications). Thats a bit poor isn't it? Is there no way that it can be used effectively without having move files in and out all the time (thereby reducing its usefulness to zero for shared files)
anybody got any comments?? |

| I didn't buy that explanation at first, but I googled "samba save excel file" and find a quite a few people having similar problems. I wonder if there's a software update where a newer version of samba can be installed on your Terastation- maybe you can go to the command line and update samba with an RPM package or something. But yeah for your case you might be better off with a Windows Home Server NAS. I've been using an Acer H340 for many months now and haven't had an issue with it (other than having to turn off search indexing to speed up the performance on it). |

do you get all the functionality of the Terastation with the Acer, e.g. RAID5 and so on. Its actually being used in a small business environment, where there is not yet sufficient demand for a dedicated server, just file sharing requirements. Basically all I want is mapped drives.
What Windows Home Server NAS's are availale?? |
