My project requires folk out there to be able to send me large (250MB) files direct to a NAS device, preferably just by using a standard browser. They must not be able to list or modify other files on the network.

    Is this doable
    Question

I know that Synology NAS's can do this because I have a couple of them, and my son who's in University can access his folder to upload files or download files that I put in there for him
He mainly uses it to backup his University work

The feature is accessible through a Web Interface called File Station

To get it up and running, you just need to setup the folder(s) that you want the folk to access, and then assign a username and password to that folder with either read or write access
Also, you can limit the amount of disk space they can access, by setting disk quotas

You can have separate usernames and passwords for each folder

    example
folder1 with username user1 and password user1, quota of 5GB, with Write access
folder2 with username user2 and password user2, quota of 10GB, with Write access
folder3 with username user3 and password user3, quota of 2GB, with Read access

When they login to the Web Interface, they will only see the folders that their logon details have been assigned to

    example
    user1 will only see folder1
    user2 will only see folder2
    user3 will only see folder3

or you can allow multiple users to have access to different folders

    example
    user1 and user2 have access to folder1
    user2 and user3 have access to folder2
    user1, user2 and user3 have access to folder3

When in the interface, the user can do all the normal operations like Create a Folder, Copy, Move, Delete, Rename, Extract, Zip, Upload, Download and Search

If I login to the interface as the Admin, I can see all three of the folders that have been setup

The web interface can also be setup with 'Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure' access if you want more security

That's extremely helpful, many thanks for your detailed response. I had identified Synology as a promising candidate in the past couple of days, and your comments confirm what I've already gleaned from their documentation.
