I am just getting into this subject so please forgive my ignorance.
I want to buy a 4 bay NAS drive to future-proof as much as possible but I am confused as to which drive would be the best one to buy?
I have been told that the Qnap 412 is a good unit that would suit my purpose, but somebody else has said the the Synology is a good make?
My dream is to store ALL my pictures, music, films and sometime in the future to record TV programmes to the NAS drive. this will then enable me to watch/view my pictures/films anywhere in the house on my network. I am planning to buy a Sonos system for my music side of things.
My router is the 30Mb Virgin hub
Can anybody give me advice on a suitable unit and the reason for that decision. I plan to buy a couple of hard drives to start with and then add more when the money allows. initial budget to buy NAS is about £300-400 + the HDD.
Many thanks in advance for your help |

| Hi belly5uk and welcome to NASDevices.com! QNAP and Synology both make very good, full-featured NAS products. The QNAP TS-410 and the Synology DS411slim both look like nice ones that should do a good job for you. You might also want to look into Windows Home Server (WHS) devices if you run Windows as it also comes with an easy to use client for you to backup the data on all your computers. And a WHS would integrate nicely with Windows Media Center. |

Hi Belly5uk
I personally do not like pre configured nas systems, However in the last 6-8months they have really picked up in home environments. Both Synology and Qnap have good reputation and they would do the trick especially for tv recording and such. There is no real way of future proofing your NAS if your only wanting to spend £300-400 because normally you have to be willing to pay a couple hundred more to get next generation technology to last. However in saying that i have a $500 system and its been running fast and efficient for the last 3 years. Anyway as the NetworkGuy said take a look into Windows Home Server, its a create introduction for beginners into the whole NAS/ Server World and couldn't be easier to install and confgure for your network. Good Luck
Peace:) |
