    Hi All from a newbie,

Shame my first post is about one of these Maxtor bricks, still that's the way it goes.

I've taken one of these Maxtor Shared Storage units off a friend before he threw it at the wall. The problem with the unit is it doen't power up properly and just continually flashes the front power light. This seems to be a common problem with these devices and as yet I haven't found anything on the Internet on how to fix it. Most people seem to give up, rob the HDD and buy a another NAS from a good manufacturer.

I'd like to try and fix the thing, (for the sake of fixing it) and I wondered about its internal 3v lithium battery and what it does. I guess it keeps some volatile memory live, if so, when that battery goes flat and the external power is removed the volatile memory would die and that could be the cause of the problem. On the other-hand the internal battery may just power something that is isolated from the main power, thus when the battery fails the unit fails; kind of failure by design.

In either case recovering from a failed internal battery would presumably require re-programming of the unit once its battery is replaced, but how one goes about that I wouldn't have a clue. Anyone on this forum have any thoughts or advice?

    Thanks

Well there are a lot of unknowns here- if you know for sure that the flashing light indicates then you might be able to proceed better. But yeah you can try a replacement battery and see if it helps. Personally I think it probably just isn't worth the time!
