The centralised "home server" is about to come into its own. With households increasingly owning more than one computer and fast broadband delivering an avalanche of digital video and music just begging to be enjoyed around the house, it has almost become a necessity.

The most pared-back form of "home server" is a NAS drive, which stands for "network attached storage". Think of it as an external hard drive that connects not just to a single PC but rather to your entire wired or wireless network. And think of Netgear's ReadyNAS Duo as one of the best little NAS boxes you can get.

Compact but built like a tank, the ReadyNAS Duo can hold from 500GB to 1000GB (1 terabyte) of music, movies, photos and even software to be shared on your home network. That includes home-theatre systems using Logitech's popular Squeezebox media player.

Plug in a USB printer and any PC, even a wireless laptop, can print to it. You can also schedule simple backups to give your PCs a degree of hands-free protection.

The set-up process is easy, with the ReadyNAS Duo up and running in 15 minutes.

But it's worth spending more time getting to know the device and working through the somewhat confronting interface to unlock features such as the inbuilt BitTorrent software, which lets you set the box to automatically download from the internet. This handy feature makes good use of "off peak" time in your broadband plan.
