Hi,

I'm looking to attach a network accessible drive to my home network and wanted some basic information regarding NAS since I haven't used it before. My first requirement is data privacy. Is there any provision in NAS to ensure privacy? Or will anyone connected to my network be able to access the files on the NAS? Second, I normally use Linux (Ubuntu) at home, how steep is the learning curve if you want to setup NAS access in Linux for playing movies/music, accessing/storing files etc.

Secondly, I need some recommendations - I've seen some options online like Maxtor Central Axis, Iomega, Netgear etc. I'm basically just looking for a NAS of around 500GB - 1TB.

Thanks!

Yes- most NAS out there have some sort of user/group-based permission access. It shouldn't be much of a a problem for your Ubuntu to connect to the NAS whether it be via Samba or NFS. It should be pretty simple in terms of the NAS showing up in the "network neighborhood", and you can make a link/shortcut to it on your desktop too.

For a good 500GB/1TB NAS (with the drive included) the Buffalo Linkstation series are a good bet. The Linkstation Pro is faster than the EZ and is faster, but the EZ is cheaper. Here's a comparison matrix on the Buffalo drives:
