Post subject: buffalo linkstation LS-Q2.0TB vs Netgear readynas NV+  PostPosted: May 25, 2009 - 08:27 PM CST

I am trying to find myself a NAS w/RAID capabilities. I want to store family pics, movies etc. so reliability is important. RAID-5 or RAID-10 seems to be where my inklings are.

The local frys elec has the buffalo linkstation quad 2TB at 490/-. The best price on netgear readynas NV+ with 2x500GB at 580/-. Diskless and then ppopulating 2TB is probably 600-700/-.

    Questions:
    1. What makes the netgear that much better than the buffalo? The specs and datasheets don't seem to reveal much here, unless I am missing something big.
    2. The buffalo appears to not have hot-swap capabilities. So how do I change out a disc when it goes bad? Can I just offline the bad disk, swap it out and reenable that disk or do I have to shutdown the whole unit to do the swap? If I had to do this, then I also have the onus to unmount all partitions/file shares from the home before I do this, right? That seems rather painful.

    Thanks,

    Kannan
